Repeat: Rusty Red, Graph-Tex win Master's, Open Lake Placid titles; Graph-Tex women defend title
Rusty Red and Graph-Tex defended their Lake Placid Summit Classic titles Sunday. The Red took out Burnt Orange 14-13 in overtime of what tournament director called the biggest crowd in Placid history. While in the Open final, Graph-Tex pulled away from Power-Tek to win 8-6. Red's Lindsay Dixon and Graph-Tex's Jake Plunket were again MVPs — the second year in a row for both players.
Burnt Orange was up on Rusty Red 12-10 with about five minutes to go, until Dixon led a stirring comeback with three straight goals, two off Jon Hess feeds, to take a 13-12 lead with 43 seconds left. Not to be outdone, Orange middie Tim Byrnes finished a Casey Powell feed with 10 seconds left to send the game to OT.
But after each team had chances, Dixon kept the hot hand and finished 3:07 into the first extra period. He finished with six goals. Dudley Dixon paced Red early with four first-half goals, while goalie Paul Schimoler made a host of huge stops to prohibit BO from taking a three-goal lead down the stretch. Roy Colsey had three goals for the Orange, and Ryan and Casey Powell combined for three goals and three assists.
In the Open final, Plunket notched a hat trick, including the game's first and final goals, for Graph-Tex, which won its seventh Open championship. The game was knotted 4-4 heading into the final frame. Joe Walters had a goal and an assist in the fourth, giving G-T the lead 6-5. Kevin Dougherty scored a huge goal to put Graph-Tex up 7-5, but Power-Tek answered to cut it to one with about a minute left. G-T won the face-off and Plunket iced it with an empty-netter.
In the women's open division, Graph-Tex continued their dominance in this year’s tournament by defeating Olde Quakers 13-6. The GT women got ahead early in game taking a 5-0 lead behind draw control and unselfish play. GT never lost the lead in the game. Jillian Byers was named MVP of the game for her big offensive output. The GT defense, led by Chelsea Strodel, was very tough to break throughout the tournament and when they did, Liz Hogan was there to shut the door. This marks two titles in a row for Graph-Tex and twice in a row that both the women's and men's teams have won the Open 1 division.
In the Men's Open Division II, Team Bud was not able to hang on to defend their title and the Roadhawks take home thier first LP championship. The Hawks got off to a good start and never looked back. Towards the end of the first half, play became extremely chippy as both squads were competing hard for the victory. Things shaped up in the second half and the Hawks held on for the win.
In the Men's Masters II Division, Atlantic Sportswear took home the title 6-5 in a nail-biter against last years winner Checkmate. This marks Atlantic Sportswear's first Master's II championship. More details to follow shortly.
In the Men's Masters III Division, the Crease Monkeys took home the title by defeating Tri-City 15-7. This marks the Crease Monkeys first championship at the tournament. More details to follow shortly.
The Slo Moes found themselves back on top of the Grand Master's I division after defeating the Sailin' Shoe 10-6 today. The Sloe Moes won the division championship in 2007 and 2008. More details to follow shortly.
Thanks to all for another great year.

Shoreham-Wading River and Anne Arundel win boys divisions, U-18 and U-15; Rome 2011 U-18 girls champs
Under blue skies and a warm sun, the Scholastic Division wrapped up with some big victories.
In the U-18 boys division, Shoreham-Wading River took home the title in a 10 - 2 performance over The Greene Turtle LC. Solid play in net for S-WR by Tyler Lutsen, Championship MVP, led the way for the Wildcats. Not only did he shut the door on the defensive end but great outlets led to a few goals for the champs. The Greene Turtle played a solid game, including many offensive chances throughout, but S-WR's goal-tending and transition game was too much for the Turtle defense to contain. In the U-15 boys division, a very talented Anne Arundel team handed the FCA Youngs Guns a tough loss, 16 - 5. Anne Arundel was led by attackman Jamie Lilly. Lilly scored 4 goals in the game and was named the MVP of the championship game. FCA was led by Sportsmanship Award winner, Trevor Hodgins, who recorded three goals in the contest.
In the first ever U-18 girls division, Rome 2011 did not lose a game all tournament en route to their title. Rome 2011 got the best of TLC in finals, winning 8 - 6. This was their second meeting of the tournament; Rome edged out TLC 11 - 6 in their initial meeting. Rome was led by a three point performance from Kara Burke, who was named Championship MVP. Kara recorded one goal and dished out two assists in the final. Meredith Moore stood out for TLC and was named the Sportsmanship Award.
